Spring in Madeira: The Complete Guide to Adventures from March to May

Madeira is spectacular all year round, but there is something truly magical about spring. Between March and May, the island transforms into a living botanical garden — hillsides blaze with wildflowers, temperatures are perfect for exploration, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. If you are looking for the ideal balance of pleasant weather, lush nature and adventure experiences without endless queues, spring is your season.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time for Madeira

Ideal Weather for Adventure

Madeira enjoys a subtropical oceanic climate, which means mild winters and moderate summers. In spring, coastal temperatures sit between 18°C and 24°C — ideal for any outdoor activity without the intense summer heat. Atlantic waters hover around 18–19°C, warm enough for water activities with a wetsuit.

Rainfall drops significantly from April onwards, although the interior mountains retain their veil of moisture that feeds the levadas and keeps the laurel forest in stunning lushness. The combination of coastal sunshine and highland mist creates landscapes of dramatic beauty.

Fewer Crowds, More Authenticity

Peak season in Madeira runs from June to September. In spring, you benefit from lower accommodation prices, less crowded restaurants and trails where you can hike for hours without encountering large groups. This is when Madeira feels most authentic — villages maintain their unhurried rhythm and locals have more time to share stories and recommendations.

The Floral Explosion

Spring in Madeira is synonymous with flowers. The island, already known as the "Garden of the Atlantic", reaches its peak botanical splendour between April and May. Purple jacarandas, orange birds of paradise, blue agapanthus, hydrangeas and hundreds of endemic species transform every road, every garden and every trail into a spectacular display of colour.

The Flower Festival: An Unmissable Event

If you visit Madeira in April or early May, do not miss the Funchal Flower Festival. This annual celebration is one of the island's most iconic events, featuring parades of floats decorated with fresh flowers, floral carpets covering the streets of the historic centre, botanical exhibitions and live music performances.

The highlight is the Allegorical Parade, which winds along the Avenida do Mar with dozens of themed floats and hundreds of participants in floral costumes. It is a feast of colour, fragrance and joy that absolutely deserves a place in your itinerary.

The festival also includes the Wall of Hope, where children from across the island place flowers on a wall in central Funchal — a moving and symbolic moment of renewal and hope.

The Best Spring Adventures in Madeira

1. Zipline and Giant Swing at Adrenaline Adventures

The number one activity in Madeira is, without question, the Adrenaline Adventures complex in Porto Moniz. And spring is arguably the best time to do it.

The 1.6-kilometre zipline launches you over the Atlantic Ocean at speeds up to 110 km/h, suspended more than 250 metres above the waves. On spring days, the air is crisp, visibility is exceptional and winds tend to be gentler than in summer — perfect conditions for an unforgettable experience.

The giant swing complements the zipline with a stomach-dropping free fall over the cliff edge before swinging you gracefully out over the Atlantic.

In spring, time slots sell out less quickly than in summer, but we still recommend booking in advance at zipline.expert/madeira/booking. The combo package (zipline + giant swing) costs €89 per person — unbeatable value for two world-class experiences.

Spring tip: The first morning slot offers the calmest winds and best light for photos. The spring landscape, with cliffs draped in green and flowers, makes photographs and videos even more stunning.

2. Levada Walks in Full Bloom

Spring is the golden season for walking Madeira's levadas. The 3,000 kilometres of irrigation channels that wind across the island are flanked by vegetation at its peak — giant ferns, wild orchids and the imposing UNESCO-listed laurel forest.

Must-do spring trails include:

  • 25 Fontes: A moderate hike ending at an amphitheatre of waterfalls — in spring, the water flow is generous and the surrounding vegetation is intensely green.
  • Caldeirão Verde: A longer trail to a lush volcanic crater, especially spectacular when the vegetation is in full bloom.
  • Vereda dos Balcões: A short, easy walk with panoramic views over the Ribeira da Metade valley — in spring, often wrapped in a mystical mist.

Important note: The 2026 permit system requires advance online purchase of a €4.50 per person permit for the most popular trails. Book your permits in advance, especially for weekends.

3. Whale and Dolphin Watching

Spring is one of the best times for cetacean watching in Madeira. It is during these months that baleen whales — including blue whales and Bryde's whales — pass through Madeiran waters on their northward migration. They join the permanent residents: bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins and short-finned pilot whales.

Excursions depart from Funchal and Calheta, lasting between 2 and 3 hours. Sea conditions in spring are generally favourable, with less swell than in winter.

4. Canyoning in the Ravines

From April onwards, water temperatures make canyoning more comfortable. Madeira's ravines, fed by winter rains, are at their most spectacular — impressive waterfalls, full natural pools and water currents that transform each gorge into a natural water park.

5. Paragliding on the North Coast

Spring winds create excellent conditions for paragliding in Madeira. Tandem flights from Arco de São Jorge offer breathtaking views over the north coast, with terraced hillsides and flower-covered mountains as a backdrop.

What to Pack for Madeira in Spring

The key is to dress in layers. The weather in Madeira can change dramatically between the sunny coast and the cloudy mountains in a matter of minutes.

Packing essentials:

  • Base layer: Quick-dry t-shirts and lightweight long sleeves
  • Mid layer: Fleece or lightweight softshell jacket
  • Outer layer: Lightweight waterproof windbreaker — essential for levada walks
  • Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with good grip (trails can be slippery)
  • Sun protection: SPF 50 sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat — the Atlantic sun is deceptively strong
  • Small backpack: For carrying layers, water and snacks during activities
  • Swimwear: You never know when you will find an irresistible natural pool
  • Water shoes: Useful for coasteering and natural pools

Note: For the zipline and giant swing, you do not need any special equipment — all safety gear is provided by Adrenaline Adventures. Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.

Booking Tips for Spring

  1. Book activities 1 to 2 weeks ahead: Although spring is less busy, morning slots for the zipline and the most popular trails fill up. Book your Adrenaline Adventures experience at zipline.expert/madeira/booking.

  2. Accommodation: Spring prices are 20 to 30% lower than peak season. Consider staying in Porto Moniz to be close to Adrenaline Adventures, or in Funchal for a more central base.

  3. Car rental: Absolutely essential in Madeira. Book in advance — even in spring, availability can be limited. A car lets you explore the island at your own pace and reach remote trailheads.

  4. Levada permits: Purchase online as soon as you finalise your itinerary. The most popular trails (25 Fontes, Caldeirão Verde) can sell out days in advance, even in spring.

  5. Combine activities: Dedicate a full day to Porto Moniz — do the zipline and giant swing in the morning, lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the natural pools, and spend the afternoon exploring the village and coastline.

Suggested Itinerary: 5 Days of Spring in Madeira

  • Day 1: Arrive in Funchal, explore the old town and Lavradores Market
  • Day 2: Zipline and giant swing at Adrenaline Adventures + afternoon in Porto Moniz
  • Day 3: 25 Fontes + Risco levada walk
  • Day 4: Morning whale watching + Flower Festival (if visiting in April)
  • Day 5: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike (conditions permitting) or canyoning

Spring Is Waiting

Madeira in spring is the island at its purest — lush, tranquil and brimming with possibility. Without the summer crowds, with flowers at every turn and temperatures perfect for adventure, it is the ideal time to discover everything the island has to offer.

Start with what you cannot miss: book your experience at Adrenaline Adventures and build your itinerary from there. Spring in Madeira is not just a season — it is a revelation.
