How to Get to Porto Moniz: Driving Routes, Bus and Transport Guide

17 March 2026Adrenaline Adventures

Porto Moniz sits at the far northwestern tip of Madeira, perched between towering sea cliffs and the open Atlantic. Getting there is half the fun. Whether you drive yourself along one of Europe's most dramatic coastal roads, catch a public bus, or join a guided tour, the journey to Porto Moniz is loaded with scenery you will remember long after you arrive.

This guide covers every transport option so you can choose the route that fits your schedule, budget, and appetite for adventure.

Driving to Porto Moniz from Funchal

The most popular way to reach Porto Moniz is by car. Funchal to Porto Moniz is roughly 55 kilometres as the crow flies, but the mountainous terrain means you will cover closer to 70-80 km depending on the route. Two main options stand out.

The Fast Route via VE3 and VE4

Take the VE3 motorway north from Funchal through the mountains, exit onto the VE4 heading west, and follow signs for Porto Moniz via the ER101 coastal road. This route takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes in normal conditions. It includes several tunnels that cut through the volcanic interior, making it efficient but slightly less scenic than the alternative.

The Scenic Coastal Road via Sao Vicente

For a more dramatic drive, head north on the VE3 to Sao Vicente and then follow the ER101 west along the north coast. This adds about 20 minutes but rewards you with jaw-dropping views of wave-battered cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and tiny villages clinging to hillsides. Stop at Seixal for a coffee and a glimpse of its black-sand beach before continuing west.

💡

Start early in the morning if you take the coastal road. The light on the north coast is best before midday and you will want to stop for photos more than once.

The Southern Coastal Route via Calheta

A less-travelled option follows the ER101 along the south coast through Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and Calheta before curling north to Porto Moniz. It takes around 1 hour 40 minutes but passes some excellent viewpoints and banana plantations. This is a good choice if you plan to stop at Calheta beach along the way.

Renting a Car in Madeira

Car hire is widely available at Funchal airport and throughout the city. Prices start from around 25 to 40 euros per day for a small car. Choose a vehicle with decent engine power since you will encounter steep gradients. Petrol stations are plentiful along the main routes but can be sparse once you leave the motorway, so top up before heading into the mountains.

Parking in Porto Moniz is free and plentiful. There are large car parks near the natural pools and along the waterfront.

Getting to Porto Moniz by Bus

Madeira's public bus network, operated by Horarios do Funchal and Rodoeste, connects Funchal to Porto Moniz. The most direct service is the Rodoeste route 80 (Funchal - Ribeira Brava - Sao Vicente - Porto Moniz), which runs several times daily and takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

Key Bus Tips

  • Buses depart from the Rodoeste terminal in Funchal, located near the farmer's market.
  • A one-way ticket costs around 5 to 7 euros.
  • Frequency is limited, especially on weekends, so check the timetable on the Rodoeste website in advance.
  • The last return bus typically leaves Porto Moniz in the late afternoon, so plan your day carefully.
ℹ️

If you rely on buses, consider staying overnight in Porto Moniz to enjoy the village at sunset and have a full day for activities the next morning. Several guesthouses and hotels offer affordable rooms with ocean views.

Guided Tours and Transfers

Several tour operators in Funchal offer full-day excursions to Porto Moniz that include transport, a guide, and stops at viewpoints along the way. Prices typically range from 35 to 60 euros per person. These tours are convenient if you do not want to drive and prefer a structured itinerary with commentary about the island's history and geography.

Private transfers by taxi or minivan are also available and cost between 60 and 100 euros one way, depending on the vehicle and number of passengers.

Is There a Ferry to Porto Moniz?

There is no regular passenger ferry service to Porto Moniz. All sea access is limited to private boats. However, the drive along the coast offers scenery that rivals any boat trip, so you will not miss out.

Arriving by Helicopter or Scenic Flight

For a truly special arrival, a handful of operators offer scenic helicopter flights from Funchal that pass over the central mountain peaks and descend along the north coast. This is a premium experience but it delivers unmatched aerial views of the island's volcanic landscape.

What to Do When You Arrive

Once you reach Porto Moniz, the real adventure begins. The village is compact and walkable, with the famous natural swimming pools, restaurants, and the Aquarium all within easy reach of the car parks.

For an unforgettable experience, book a session on the Adrenaline Adventures zipline — a 1.6 km flight over the coastal valley at speeds up to 110 km/h — or take on the giant swing suspended 250 metres above the Atlantic. Both are located just outside the village and include UTV mountain transfers to the launch platforms.

Planning Your Return Journey

If you drove, consider returning via a different route to double your scenic mileage. The circular route — north via Sao Vicente, return south via the Paul da Serra plateau — is a full-day highlight that passes through Madeira's highland plateau at 1,400 metres, offering a completely different landscape of open moorland and endemic heather.

💡

Fill up with fuel in Porto Moniz before driving back. The next reliable petrol station heading east is in Sao Vicente, about 30 minutes away.

Getting to Porto Moniz is straightforward no matter your transport choice, and every route delivers spectacular Madeiran scenery. The only difficult part is deciding which road to take.
